A Saturday Morning Pick-me-up

I found a great article in my email from AARP this morning.>>>  A Retired Teacher Steps Confidently Into the Digital Age

Here are the 5 Reasons I like it so much.

  1. Ms. Louvenia’s picture captured me as I was scrolling through my email.  Beauty, Intelligence, Humor, Wisdom, Experience, and Courage – that smile and the slightly raised eyebrow say all of that to me. And yes, I am old-school, so anyone who has 10 plus years on me deserves respect.   That means Ms. Mister, etc. instead of first names.
  • As a writer, I love the opening quote. It grabbed my attention and set the tone for the article.  According to data from July 2022 at  www.census.gov, 16.8% of the US population was over 65. That is approximately 55.9 million people! That is a huge potential market.
  • There is a positive view of life after career.  Retirement is different for each person. I was exhausted when I retired and I needed to decompress and chill for awhile. Some retirees focus on extended family, helping to raise grandchildren or care for elders. Others start a new career or travel. And we must acknowledge that not everyone retires, some people continue to work because they want to or they have to.
  • Lifelong Learning is a key principle for me. The world of full of things that I don’t know. Continuing to ask questions, to think critically (not the same as criticizing) and being willing to try something new helps to keep life fresh and exciting. Refuse believe that life has passed you by.
  • And finally, Community. I am challenged by the way Javar Juarez chose to be the solution to a problem in his community. It is very easy to become isolated and focused on your own world. What would happen if each of us paid more attention to what is going on around us and found at least one small way to reach out each month?

OK, that’s enough for now.  I would love to hear what you think of Ms. Louvenia’s story as well as your answers to the three questions below.

  1. How does your business serve the over 65 market?
  2. If you are a caregiver to someone over 65, what services or tips can you recommend to fellow care givers?
  3. If you are over 65 yourself, tell us what is the biggest challenge and the biggest joy in your life right now.

Thanks!
